Saturday is debt day in the UK

UK consumers will spend an average of £549,000 on Saturdays alone making it the worst day of the week to build up significant debt problems.

Research from Co-Op Bank Credit Cards found that many people feel they deserve to buy themselves something as a treat for getting through a hard week of work.

Shoes, clothes and socialising came in as the highest forms of expenditure but travel and entertainment also figured highly in the list.

Product manager for the Co-operative Maxine Xodo said, "As a nation we work some of the longest hours in Europe and many people live for the weekend, with Saturday being the one-day where people feel they can let their hair down and enjoy themselves."
