Government debt help announced

It has been announced that up to 500 debt advisers will be providing government debt help as part of a £45m project to give debt advice to people suffering severe debt problems.

The money for the government debt help will be raised from the Treasury's Financial Exclusion Fund as part of a two-year programme to help people some of the most deprived areas of England and Wales in need of debt help.

Bids from 14 projects have been picked by the Department of Trade and Industry out of dozens of applications to share the money.

The DTI said that while debt advice is currently available via telephone helplines and the internet, there was a need for more face-to-face government debt help.
