More than 10 million UK homes can't afford to pay higher premiums for their energy bills without slipping into severe debt, according to uSwitch.
The price comparison site also found that nearly half of consumers will have to reduce their energy output in the winter months to cope financially.
Gas and electricity bills have risen 23% on average for UK residents so far this year, leaving many unable to balance their books.
